THE RUNNING GAME!!!

Hey guys, ROCKnROLLA again with some more tips for Madden 10, but this time tips on how to run the ball.

O.K, I love the running game, and for some reason I feel more accomplished when I've had a great game rushing.
Now I'm not saying I'm the best, I've just been using the run since 92 Madden to the present day, so that’s 17 years of playing Madden and using the run, some people may use the run differently than I do, as we all have our different style’s, but I may have some help full tips for people that are just starting out or for those people who may be struggling with the run and need a new approach.

Let's Begin

A good running game can open up the Pass and lead to great Play Action plays; it open’s up the middle of the field and also leads to some big plays over the top!!

You have two types of runner's/halfbacks, fast and agile speed backs or power backs also known as truckers.
Both can do a job for you if you use them the right way.
If you have a combination of the two running backs then you are set for a good running game on offense.
Look at the Cowboys; they have a very good set for the run and so do the Giants.
These two teams have a good combination of runner's.

Franchise Mode

Building my Running Game Franchise

I build a team around the rush so I trade for some good run blockers and fast receivers. I will look at my halfbacks and look at their attributes; I will want at least two speed backs and one power back.
I don’t really need a top rated quarter back; as long as he is accurate and good at Play Action then I'm good.
I try to get fast receivers who are good at beating/escaping press coverage so they can create more space down field which opens up space for my runner and also gets them into position for play action.
I'm not scared to get rid of a 90 overall for 80+ overall with speed and A potential.
For example if I'm the Buccaneers, I would trade Antonio Bryant 86 overall with B potential and wanting 11mil a year with 86 Speed and 91 Acceleration, for Eddie Royal 80 overall with A potential and 630K a year, Speed 93, Acceleration 94. E.Royal will do more for my team than A.Bryant will, the following season his overall rating will be late 80’s or even 90 overall, depending on progression, so for me it’s a bargain.

My Game Plan

O.K, when starting on offense and at the start of a game, either against human or CPU, I will try a few things and mix it up a bit, just to see what reactions I get.
I'm not going straight into running the ball, I'm going to build up to it and try a few throw's down field, doesn’t matter if they are complete [bonus] or incomplete, I’m trying to get the corners and safety's to back off, as they will now be aware of the threat and know that I’m not afraid to throw down field.
I will then try a few runs inside making the defensive line and linebackers pinch to create space for me outside or visa versa, run outside then inside, at all times moving the defense into different positions trying to confuse them and to make them aware that I will try and do anything, rather than just staying one dimensional.
I will use a speed back outside and power back inside.
I’m not a big fan rushing outside or pitching the ball because if the other team has fast linebackers with good awareness then this will lead to negative yards. I will on occasion do this to mix it up and depending on how the defense has lined up then I will audible to HB stretch or something similar to what I have set for my audible’s, and then rush the outside.

You really need to mix it up as eventually you will get that big break.
I know so many people who get frustrated with the run and they give up all together and they then start forcing the pass, this will lead to mistakes and a certain defeat!!
If you get some good blocks and the defense is tired you can burst through the middle and break a few tackles which will lead you to a big gain and some well earned yards. You have to stick with it because the hole will eventually open up and lead to that big run.

This will help with your passing game too and also lead to good effective Play action plays.
Once the corners start to press and blitz you, then its time for you to throw some bomb’s over the top!!

My Top Tips

1. Practice, Practice, Practice. I don’t stress this enough, the best Madden players will spend hours practicing and perfecting their skills.
There are different game modes for you to practice different playbooks and also to learn how to use your blockers and skill moves. So use them!!!

2. Look at your personal, as I said you have speed backs and power backs.
Look at their attributes, some may be elusive and have good spin moves, juke moves, stiff arm, etc. etc. you will then know how to use the runner effectively.

3. Use your BLOCKER'S, let them run ahead and stay behind them. So try not to sprint until you are clear or certain you can beat the on coming defenders!!!

4. Try not to use turbo and the right stick all the time.
Try running in practice mode with no turbo and no right stick, you will be amazed at how you can dodge a defender by just going left and right on the left stick. You can also break tackles without using the truck stick. You can use stiff arm which is really effective if a player has tackled you as you can push him off.
You won’t see me use turbo button until I've broken through the hole or I've pitched the ball outside and have no blockers to block for me.
When I’m rushing the middle I won’t use turbo as I find that you are not as agile and cannot turn as sharply. So running normally gives me time to react to oncoming tacklers, so in that situation I will either use stiff arm or truck stick.

5. Think 2 moves a head, anticipate what the defenders are going to do, this way you have already decided what you will do if the defender is in front of you.
For example if I pitch the ball to the right, and my defender is pushing the defensive lineman forward or inside, then I know that I will have to juke to the right to give myself more space away from my blocker and the defender. If I have space inside and can’t go outside I will juke left and go through the hole.

6. How to use the right stick.
When you are being tackled or gang tackled keep flicking the right stick up/forward. I find that the runner will keep his legs moving, trying to break the tackle.

7. Keep with it, don’t give up, try spending a whole game just running, exploring and trying all different types of run plays.

8. Good Luck

Well I hope this helps and gives you a different approach towards Madden and the game of Football.
